Not religious but I love stained glass windows in churches
Had a cracking 19.5 mile walk with my friend yesterday, it was a lovely sunny day, we embarked on a hike around the local villages and part of the Cotswold Way.
Here’s another snap
Next is a photo of my friend taking a photo with the lovely scenery in the background
A sweet little ginger kitten in the pub we visited
A fantastic pub that we went into
All in all, it was a fantastic day out. Lovely sunshine and fantastic beer added to the enjoyment of the day
Next train from Warmley station…
The Bluetones, a very good britpop band from the 90s. They’re splitting up and they’re doing a farewell tour. They’re playing in Bristol tonight so I’m going. It’s going to be memorable.
This would clear up the jails quite quickly. Now that that’s settled we can keep the real criminals in there forever instead of giving out death penalties like they’re fucking Christmas gifts. We’re going to have to open businesses, not just “coffee shops” but also markets. I want people that know…
It’s logical, sensible, humane and cost-effective. However, the ultra-conservative, christian principled ‘eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth’ brigade will never let it happen in the States.

It’s been 21 years since the Strangeways riot and the wholesale collapse of the prison system, luckily we’ve not seen a similar collapse since then. Although we’ve had incidents, non have caused the Strangeways effect (other prisons copying what they saw at Strangeways.)
However, the recent riots on the outside and the resulting increase in prison population indicates the starting point of a new challenge that faces anyone responsible for prison management.
Although dismayed at the scenes of disorder, I’m not surprised at what happened, but I’m not here to talk about that.
I’m talking about the thoughtless reaction from the Government, which pressured sentencers to hand out higher than normal custodial sentences to those involved in the disorder. Two people sentenced to 4 years for trying to organise a riot on facebook?? One person sentenced to 5 months for handling stolen goods (it was a pair of shorts and she was asleep during the riots.) Yet for possession of child pornography you may get a community sentence
There is a gang presence in our prisons now - no not the Krays, or the Mafia, or Yakuza but gangs based on streets and areas that they live in. Of course this has gone for a long time but now it is having a serious affect on the Penal system. Consider this, you have a prison of 400 people, they have a human right to education, work, exercise, to socialise, to eat and to be released. Now, not all prisoners in my hypothetical prison are gang members, only 40 of them and they are all in different gangs which are in conflict with each other??
It’s clearly going to stretch the already limited funds on the prison service. Labour failed to tackle this problem, they were happy to peddle the “Polite White Middle Class’ attitude of throwing a bit of money into the problem areas and locking up those who didn’t comply has failed. Will the Tories attempt to address these issues head on? Only time will tell.
One thing is for certain, if one fails to look into why violence happens in gangs you can never solve it. Purely chucking someone in prison for a few years and hoping they’ll reform at the drop of a hat won’t solve things either. It will take time but I hope the light-bulb moment isn’t as a result of a major disturbance which will cost millions of pounds, cause hundreds of injuries and possibly deaths to officers, prisoners and others.
